We love crafting for our kids, but today’s blog post is focused on home decor crafting projects! They’re beautiful, practical & budget friendly. Music to our ears if you ask us!!
The Perfect House Plant
If you’re a plant lover like us, but struggle to keep up with watering like us… we’ve got the perfect project for you. Make your own adorable house plant and never worry about watering again!
You’ll need a quick trip to your local garden centre or craft store for a terracotta pot, or a pot of your choice! Just make sure it’s interior is not glazed so that your hot glue will stick! You can scale this project to fit into a budget that works for you - we used about 80 felt balls for a larger and longer plant, but you can always cut down on the number of balls you use based on your pot size and length of your strands! (If you’re tempted to try this with regular pom poms, don’t say we didn’t warn you! The felt balls give this project so much texture and class, and regular pom poms just won’t give the same look!)
Supplies Needed:
- Felt balls in Army Green & Lime Green (we used about 80)
- Green or Regular Wire (we used 18 gauge)
- Nylon Cording in Green (we used the 60" pre-cut length)
- Foam Half Sphere
- Terracotta Pot
- Brown Felt Fabric Sheet
- Wire Cutters, Scissors & Utility Knife (Wire Cutters can be purchased as part of our Crafting Tool Set)
- Hot Glue Gun
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Take your foam half sphere flat side down, and test the fit in your pot. It should sit in the pot snuggly and not rise above the lip of the pot. You may need to trim your foam to sit properly in your pot.
2. Lay your trimmed foam on your felt sheet, cutting out a circle around the foam sphere. We gave ourselves 1” extra material all the way around the sphere.
3. With the flat side down on the felt, carefully hot glue the edges of the felt to your foam sphere. Foam and hot glue need a bit of convincing to stay together, so just take your time and hold your glued edges until they’re set. You may need to cut triangle shapes out of the edge of the felt as it wraps around the sphere.
4. Taking your utility knife, carefully cut incisions in the flat side of your felt/foam shape. These will be the holes that you push your plant strands through, so they don’t need to be long or deep! Just enough to get your wire pushed through!
5. Run a line of hot glue in the interior of your pot, and push your felt/foam shape into it.
6. Take your wire, and cut 2” long sections. These will be the stems that you push into the foam.
7. Run a line of hot glue on the last 0.5” of your wire and quickly wrap your cording around it to join them.
8. Gather your felt balls and begin gluing them together, being sure to glue them around the cording. Make your plant strands as long or short as you prefer! We switched from Army Green to Lime Green about halfway through, and ended our strand with a few single felt balls.
9. Trim your cording, leaving about 2-3” after your last felt ball.
10. Taking your wire end, push your strand through your felt incisions and into the foam. You can also dot a bit of hot glue on the end of your wire before pushing it into the foam if you’re worried about them falling out, but they’re fairly secure without glue as well!
11. Repeat making stems! We chose to make 6!
12. If you don’t prefer to see the stems at the top, you can also hot glue a few felt balls around your stems to hide them a bit. This will also make your plant look even more full!
Your ever-green house plant is ready to go! Hang it up in your favorite plant hanger, or on a side table that needs some fun :)
Jersey Yarn Baskets
While we can’t take credit for the design of these baskets, we CAN take credit for the beautiful Jersey Yarn used to make them! Our Jersey Yarn is so useful and multipurpose and these cute baskets highlight what a beautiful product this yarn is!

We tried making a small, XL, and use the pattern base to try an extra wide shallow basket. They’re great for holding rolls of yarn and with a little leather patch sewn on, you can even keep your basket organized and labelled!
Crochet hooks are usually quite a reasonable price to purchase, and we found one ball of yarn easily made the small size basket. With over 25 color and pattern choices to choose from, you can easily match your basket to your aesthetic or home decor!
Wooden Pot Trivet
Pot Trivets remind us of our grandparents - they always had a beautiful vintage set of pot trivets for family dinners. They were beautiful, timeless, and elegantly called “Onderzetters” by our Dutch extended family. We wanted to play around with making our own and created two styles! We scoured Pinterest and found both of these styles for sale. But like most crafty people, we look at the listings and thought… I can make that… So we did ;)
The round wooden trivet took a bit of thinking to put together (so let us know in the comments if you’d like a tutorial!). We made three rings of beads using 12 x 1.25” (13mm hole) Maple beads, 10 x 22mm Maple beads, 7 x 16mm (4mm hole) Maple beads and tied them off with regular cording. After nesting them together we took a long length of cording and began to weave it through from bead to bead pulling them all together.
We also made a longer style trivet for a casserole dish using 25mm Maple beads in a loop, and a 19mm silicone double hole bead for the crossing section.
